China's rise as a commercial power and its rapidly growing demand for oil and gas resources have led it to forge new ties with the Middle East and to aggressively expand its influence. Yet China now confronts a Middle East that is rapidly being reshaped by its own internal upheaval. Arab countries have faced unprecedented popular uprisings, Iran continues its efforts to acquire nuclear weapons, Turkey is emerging as a regional giant and questions surrounding Israel remain unsettled. How have these events affected China’s goals in the Middle East? What role will China play at this pivotal moment in the region’s history?
Please join us for an exciting breakfast covering these topics and more with Dr. Pan Guang, Professor and Academic Director of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, a leading foreign policy think tank in China. Dr. Pan is a Senior Advisor on Anti-terror Affairs to the Shanghai Municipality and the Ministry of Public Security of the People's Republic of China. He has authored a number of books and articles including China's Success in the Middle East, China's Energy Strategy, China's Policy on AF/PAK and From Silk Road to ASEM: 2000 Years of Asia-Europe Relations.
